Episode 11
How to protect children from cyber perpetrators?
In 2016, more than half the child sex abuse material hosted globally was in Europe, so there is still some way to go to make children safe online. We look at the issues of cybercrime and digital literacy. Future generations must be able to take full advantage of the opportunities presented by digital technologies and this means teaching children how to protect themselves online, but also how to navigate the online world critically so they don't become prey to disinformation or conspiracy campaigns.
We also need to tackle online child sex abuse. The dark web has allowed networks to proliferate in exchanging this material, and social media sites can often be a gateway for grooming vulnerable children.
To discuss all this and the potential solutions, we are joined by MEPs Frances Fitzgerald and Sabine Verheyen and from Europol, Head of Operations of the Cybercrime Unit, Fernando Ruiz PĂ©rez.
